Flora | From the Family Tree to the Table.

Some plants come with a little more history than others.

Meet Flora -

Years ago, I was gifted my very first houseplant - a spider plant. That one little plant became two plants.. became three, four, five, and honestly, at this point, probably hundreds...

It sparked my obsession with plants, but it also sparked something else - my love of propagation. Every time that original spider plant grew another little baby, I couldn't help myself. I rooted them, planted them, I gave them away, I kept some. And those babies eventually grew babies of their own... and the family tree kept growing. I think at one point, my apartment was filled with spider plants - everywhere! A whole family affair.

Flora is somewhere on that family tree, and there is something that feels pretty special about the family history behind this plant. The generational growth that stemmed from my very first plant - and it seems fair she would be invited to the family dinner table, gathered with warmth, conversation and a delicious home-cooked meal.

This cute little gravy boat felt perfect for Flora. It was yet another W 7th find. Pairing it with a plant with so much history just felt homey. There's something about a gravy boat that makes me think of family dinners - Grandma pouring gravy around the dinner table - and I loved the idea of Flora's leaves pouring from it instead.

If you'd like to give Flora a place at your table, here's what she needs to feel at home...

Caring for Flora

Flora is happiest in bight, indirect light, but spider plants are pretty forgiving and will tolerate lower light too. Plenty of light will help keep her growing full and happy.

Let the top of the soil dry a bit between waterings. Since Flora's gravy boat doesn't have drainage, smaller drinks are best - she'd much rather be a little thirsty than sit in soggy soil.

As Flora grows, she may eventually grow long stems with tiny white flowers and little spider plant babies of her own - continuing that family tree for yet another generation.
